Your Privacy Matters

DebtKiller is designed with your privacy in mind. We believe your financial data is personal and should stay that way. This policy explains what we collect, how we use it, and how we protect it.

What We Collect

We only collect the information necessary to provide you with our debt tracking service:

  • Account information — your name, email address, and password (hashed)
  • Debt information — balances, interest rates, minimum payments, due dates, and categories you enter
  • Payment history — payment amounts, dates, and notes you log
  • Preferences — payoff strategy, theme, notification settings, and display preferences
  • Household membership — if you join a shared household, your membership and role

What We Don't Collect

  • Bank account numbers or login credentials
  • Social security numbers or government IDs
  • Credit card numbers used for purchases
  • Location data or device identifiers
  • Browsing history outside of DebtKiller

How We Use Your Data

  • Calculate payoff projections and timelines based on your debt information
  • Send email reminders for upcoming payment due dates (if enabled)
  • Send late payment alerts and inactivity nudges (if enabled)
  • Display in-app notifications for payments logged, badges earned, and milestones
  • Share your debt data with household members you have invited or accepted an invitation from

What We Don't Do

  • We do NOT sell your data to anyone, ever
  • We do NOT share your information with third-party advertisers
  • We do NOT use your data for targeted advertising
  • We do NOT provide your data to data brokers or analytics companies
  • We do NOT connect to your bank accounts or financial institutions

Shared Households

When you create or join a shared household:

  • All household members can see the debts, payment history, and payoff projections within the household
  • Your name and email are visible to other household members
  • Debts can be assigned to individual members, making the assignment visible to all members
  • Only the household owner can invite or remove members
  • You can leave a household at any time, which removes your access to shared data

Data Storage & Security

  • All sensitive financial data (balances, interest rates, payment amounts) is encrypted at rest using AES-256 encryption
  • Passwords are hashed using bcrypt and are never stored in plain text
  • All connections use HTTPS encryption in transit
  • We use session-based authentication with secure, HTTP-only cookies

Cookies & Sessions

DebtKiller uses essential cookies only for authentication and session management. We do not use tracking cookies, analytics cookies, or third-party advertising cookies.

Data Retention & Deletion

  • Your data is retained as long as your account is active
  • You can delete all your debt and payment data at any time from the Settings page
  • You can delete your entire account from the Profile page, which permanently removes all your data
  • If you leave a household, debts you created remain in the household but your personal account data is not affected
  • We do not retain backups of deleted data

Children's Privacy

DebtKiller is not intended for use by anyone under the age of 18. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify users of significant changes via email or in-app notification. The "last updated" date at the top of this page reflects when the policy was last modified.
